The Sound of the Bentley Torcal: Creating an Emotional Rhythm Instead of Imitating a V8
On 23 September 2026, Bentley unveiled the Torcal, its first production battery electric vehicle. At EV Soundscape, we were particularly interested in its powertrain sound, the “Bentley Dynamic Symphony.” How can a car without an engine still convey the distinct feeling of driving a Bentley? The Torcal approaches that question through rhythm.
What Bentley Found in a V8 Recording
According to Bentley, its design team recorded and analysed one of its V8 engines in a studio. Rather than concentrating on a literal copy of its timbre, they focused on the rhythm that makes the sound compelling. In a further experiment, they played the V8 sound through parabolic speakers on one side while a drummer performed on the other. As listeners walked between them, Bentley says they perceived striking similarities in energy and emotional impact.
Neither an engine nor a human performance unfolds with perfectly uniform timing. Bentley sees small variations and imperfections as qualities that give a sound a human character. Working with musicians, the team then created a new sound for the Torcal using performances on real instruments, including drums, viola and bass guitar. The sound responds to the driver’s inputs. Its stated aim is to evoke the feelings associated with a Bentley V8 through new musical materials, rather than to make a literal copy of the engine sound.
What EV Soundscape Sees in the Design of Sound Over Time
What interests us is Bentley’s focus on how sound develops over time. We think of the moment a sound begins, the rhythm that may emerge as the beat and texture change during acceleration, the response to the driver’s inputs, and the subtle variations woven through it. Such temporal structures can shape the connection between driver and car.
This is EV Soundscape’s interpretation of the Torcal’s design approach. It does not mean that Bentley has disclosed its internal audio algorithms. The available material does not establish which acoustic parameters are controlled or how. Even so, shifting the question from “How closely does it resemble a V8?” to “What structure over time can evoke the feelings a V8 once gave us?” offers a valuable perspective on EV sound design.
A Cabin Experience That Goes Beyond Sound
The Torcal offers four modes: Bentley, Comfort, Sport and Refresh. Bentley describes how sound, lighting, climate, air quality and digital information work together to shape a different cabin atmosphere in each mode. In Sport mode, the soundtrack becomes more intense. In Refresh mode, increased fresh-air circulation and brighter lighting aim to help occupants feel renewed.
The driving sound responds to the car’s controls, while light, air and displays contribute to the occupants’ experience. In the Torcal, EV sound is treated as part of the wider journey. At EV Soundscape, we likewise want to consider not only the quality of a sound, but also how the experience changes with the driver’s actions and over time.
To evaluate the Torcal’s sound fully, we would need to experience acceleration and mode changes inside the car, beyond watching videos or listening to demonstration recordings. For now, what stands out is Bentley’s effort to translate the emotional appeal of an internal combustion engine into a new sonic composition.
